Every August, book lovers across the world celebrate Women in Translation Month to address the gender disparity in global literature. Despite the importance of the movement, the idea of WiT begs some fundamental questions: Who is a woman? Who are being summoned under WiT, often through an asterisk? Must we all squeeze inside one label and one month?
In this unruly spirit, we invite you to a free, online reading on August 24, 8:30 p.m. EST that features translations from four different languages under the theme, “Women, Transsexuals, and Other Monsters.” Here, we rub up against labels and use the friction as a spark. If a “we” is called into being, it can only hold together by refusing to seal. Join us in celebrating voices spanning genders, genres, languages, and multimedia, in creating space to lean into our individual monstrosities.
